Algae

The table below gives a short overview of the major taxonomic groups of aquatic algae sampled on cobble and terra cotta unglazed ceramic clay tile substrates from the P&G Experimental Stream Facility between 1989 - 2000. Most of the observed species are periphyton, algae that are associated with submerged surfaces.

Numerous taxonomic experts worked with P&G staff in developing identifications of organisms that were collected. Many example specimens are curated in the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia and the Ohio State Museum of Biological Diversity in Columbus, Ohio. The following individuals were responsible for collections and identifications: S. Belanger and J. Bowling (P&G); T. Cuffney (United States Geological Survey, Raleigh, North Carolina); D. Hart, K. Wolbach, J. Jackson and B. Sweeney (Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania); D. McNew and P. Lewis (Great Lakes Environmental Center, Traverse City, Michigan); B. Armitage (Ohio Biological Survey and Midwest Biodiversity Institute, Columbus, Ohio).
