The table below gives a short overview of the major taxonomic groups of aquatic algae sampled on cobble and terra cotta unglazed ceramic clay tile substrates from the P&G Experimental Stream Facility between 1989 - 2000. Most of the observed species are periphyton, algae that are associated with submerged surfaces.

Many example specimens are curated in the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia and the Ohio State Museum of Biological Diversity in Columbus, Ohio.
