Petrolatum-Depositing Body Wash To Improve Dry Skin Under Challenging Conditions

These studies show that this new petrolatum-depositing body wash can provide a skin moisturization benefit under conditions that reflect environmental challenges the skin will face in winter and in summer.  Further, they demonstrate that skin can benefit from using the petrolatum-depositing body wash year-round, not just in winter.   The PDBW significantly improved the ski instructors' dry (leg) skin condition over the 1-week period of home-use. Introduction

Environmental factors have a profound influence on skin condition.  Cold, dry weather conditions and the dry, heated indoor conditions that go along with them are well established as factors contributing to the development of dry skin.  While weather conditions are improved during the summer months in the northern hemisphere, the skin is still subject to a number of environmental insults that can lead to dryness, including sun, wind, and water (chlorine) during swimming.  There is also a greater likelihood that skin on body areas such as the legs is visible during the summer, and even a relatively low level of dry skin may be less tolerable under these conditions than it would be in winter.

Objective

To test the ability of a new, petrolatum-depositing body wash technology to provide a skin moisturization benefit under conditions representative of environmental challenges the skin will face in winter and summer.

Methods

Winter Study •Healthy adult females employed as ski-instructors in Breckenridge, CO were recruited.  The mean dew point during the study period was 24.4°F. •Sixty subjects with dry leg skin showered daily at home for 1 week with a blinded, petrolatum-depositing body wash (PDBW) product containing a moderate amount (30%) of moisturizer. •Expert evaluations of dry leg skin condition were made at baseline and study end, and subjects completed a self-assessment questionnaire about their body skin condition at these visits. Summer Study •Healthy adult females belonging to a masters swim club in Santa Monica, CA were recruited. These women swim regularly (several times per week) in chlorinated pools.  The mean dew point during the study period was 62.3°F. •Twenty-five subjects with dry leg skin showered daily at home for 1 week with the blinded, PDBW product. •Expert evaluations of dry leg skin condition were made at baseline and study end, and subjects completed a self-assessment questionnaire about their body skin condition at these visits.

Results

Winter Study

The PDBW significantly improved the ski instructors' dry (leg) skin condition over the 1-week period of home-use.

Subjects noticed significant improvement in parameters related to their body skin condition after using the PDBW for 1 week.

Summer Study

The PDBW significantly improved the swimmers' dry (leg) skin condition over the 1-week period of home-use.

Subjects noticed significant improvement in parameters related to their body skin condition after using the PDBW for 1 week.

Apart from location and population considerations, the difference in results between the studies may reflects a weather effect.  For example, dry skin is more difficult to improve in winter months, hence the somewhat lower improvement observed in the winter study.  Subjects' skin was likely in better condition upon entering the summer study, hence the smaller improvement in self-assessed parameters.

Conclusion

These studies show that this new petrolatum-depositing body wash can provide a skin moisturization benefit under conditions that reflect environmental challenges the skin will face in winter and in summer.  Further, they demonstrate that skin can benefit from using the petrolatum-depositing body wash year-round, not just in winter.
